Es ist Tradition, dass das neue Jahr auf dem Blog mit meinen liebsten Büchern, Filmen und Serien und Musikentdeckungen aus dem vergangenen Jahr losgeht. Auch wenn 2024 ein paar Änderungen auf dem Blog passieren, wird der popkulturelle Jahresrückblick bestehen bleiben, keine Sorge!

2023 for me was the year of nostalgia, the really big feelings, and surprisingly enough, really good non-fiction. Speaking of big feelings! That’s my queue to talk about my favourite films and tv shows that I discovered/watched in the past year.

I. FALLING INTO PLACE
Dieser Film ist einer der wenigen Filme letztes Jahr, die ich im Kino gesehen habe. Und auch der letzte Kinobesuch des Jahres 2023. Es geht um Kira und Ian, die sich zufällig auf der Ilse of Skye begegnen und sich einerseits sofort sehr nahe sind, sich aber andererseits auf die ein oder andere Weise verpassen.
Schon als ich den Trailer gesehen habe wusste ich, dass mich der Film emotional total fertig machen würde. Und das ist dann auch passiert. Ich hab seit dem Kinobesuch nicht aufgehört über den Film nachzudenken – die vielen verpassten Chancen der zwei Hauptcharaktere, die Spannung die sich zwischen ihnen aufbaut, die intensiven Gespräche, die poetischen Vibes, die großartigen Bilder und der perfekt passende Soundtrack – alles hat mich wirklich umgehauen. Ganz abgesehen davon, ist der Film auch eine Freude, weil er von der deutschen Schauspielerin Aylin Tezel geschrieben wurde und sie auch selbst Regie geführt und Kira gespielt hat. Ihr deutscher Akzent ist ganz wunderbar und ich fand es schön, diese deutsch-schottische Koproduktion so liebevoll umgesetzt zu sehen. Ich kann den Film nur so, so sehr empfehlen.

This was one of the few films I saw in cinema last year. And it was my final visit to the cinema in 2023, too. The film is about Kira and Ian, who meet by chance during a weekend on the Isle of Skye. On the one hand the two of them have an instant connection and are quite close from the get go, but on the other hand they also miss (out on) each other in one way or the other.

Another wonderful aspect is the fact that the German actress Aylin Tezel not only wrote and directed the movie, but also starrs as Kira. Her German accent is a delight and I think that the whole German-Scottish co-production was beautifully crafted. I highly, highly recommend this film.

II. ONE PIECE (ANIME & LIVE ACTION)
Du weißt das wahrscheinlich nicht über mich, aber als ich ein Kind war, habe ich den One Piece Anime sehr geliebt. Zorro war mein erster fiktionaler Traummann und irgendwann 2018 habe ich dann beschlossen, den Anime nochmal komplett anzuschauen. Als ich fast up-to-date war (was bei den damaligen 830 Folgen oder so, schon eine echte Leistung war), konnte ich sie dann nicht mehr streamen und meine Begeisterung ist eingeschlafen.
Bis 2023 die Live Action Adaption von One Piece auf Netflix kam und mich total mitgerissen hat. Ich hatte wirklich Angst, aber ich finde die Adaption ist trotz einiger Änderungen wirklich so, so, sooo gut gelungen und man merkt, dass alle Beteiligten großen Respekt und viel Liebe für One Piece haben. Ich habe die erste Staffel mehrmals gesehen, mir alles was ich seit 2018 im Anime verpasst habe reingezogen, und kann die zweite Staffel auf Netflix kaum erwarten. Taz Skylar (der Sanji spielt) war/ist mein größter Celebrity Crush des Jahres und Mackenyu hat auch meine Liebe für Zorro wieder entfacht (habe mir jetzt auch endlich zwei weitere Ohrlöcher stechen lassen, um Zorros berühmte Ohrringe zu tragen). Du merkst, ich bin wieder im totalen Fangirl-Modus. Daher durfte One Piece (sowohl der Anime, als auch die Netflix-Serie) in diesem Blogpost natürlich auf keinen Fall fehlen. Die große Piratenära ist endlich im Mainstream angekommen und ich bin super happy darüber.

You might not know this about me, but as a child I really loved the One Piece anime. Zorro was my first fictional crush, aka sexual awakening, and sometime in 2018 I decided to start the anime again from the beginning. But when I was almost up to date (which was a real achievement, considering the 830-ish episodes that were available at the time), I couldn’t stream it anymore, so I put it to rest. Until the One Piece live action adaptation was released on Netflix in 2023 and I absolutely went crazy for it. I was so scared it wouldn’t be any good, but despite the changes they made to the story, it stays so, so, sooo true to the source material and you can really feel that everyone involved has passion and love for One Piece. I’ve watched the first season several times and caught up on the anime from where I stopped back in 2018 until the most recent episode; I absolutely cannot wait for the second season of the live action on Netflix. Taz Skylar (who plays Sanji) was/is my biggest celebrity crush of the year and Mackenyu reignited my love for Zorro (I finally got two more ear piercings, so that I can wear the famous Zorro earrings). You might be able to tell, I am in total fangirl mode again. So obviously One Piece (the anime, as well as the live action) HAD TO be mentioned in this blogpost. The big pirate era has finally made it into the mainstream, and I’m so here for it.
III. THE BEAR
Wenn wir schon von Celebrity Crushes reden, darf auch Jeremy Allen White in meinem Jahresrückblick nicht fehlen. Ich wollte The Bear schon länger mal gucken und bin im Herbst letzten Jahres dann endlich dazu gekommen. Ich habe die zwei Staffeln die es bisher gibt innerhalb weniger Tage durchgesuchtet und mich total reinziehen lassen in die dreckige, chaotische Küche von Sternekoch Carmy und seiner schwer zu bändigenden Sandwichladen-Crew. Es ist gleichzeitig lecker und ekelerregend diese Serie zu schauen; die Charaktere sind liebenswert bis durchgedreht und abgefuckt und ich habe selten einer Serie gesehen, die so gut geschrieben ist wie diese. Man braucht wirklich starke Nerven, aber die Show verdient allen Hype und ich hoffe, die dritte Staffel kommt ganz, ganz bald.
While we’re talking about celebrity crushes, I absolutely have to mention Jeremy Allen White in this look back on 2023. I’ve been meaning to watch The Bear for such a long time and finally got around to it last autumn. I watched the two seasons that are available so far within a few days and got completely sucked into the world of gourmet chef Carmy and his hard to control sandwich shop crew. Watching this show is delicious and hard to stomach all at the same time and the characters range from lovely to completely unhinged and fucked up. I haven’t seen many other series that are as well written as this one. While it might be emotionally exhausting to watch at times, this show truly deserves all the hype and I hope the third season will be released very, very soon
IV. THIS IS US
Wenn Dir wirklich zum Heulen zumute ist, dann kann ich Dir nur This Is Us empfehlen. Bei diesem Familiendrama, das über mehrere zeitliche Ebenen, Lebenslagen und Generationen hinweg erzählt wird, handelt es sich auch um etwas, was ich erst nach dem großen Hype für mich entdeckt habe, da die Serie schon 2016 angefangen hat. Aber damals habe ich grade erst Gilmore Girls geschaut und Milo Ventimiglia lieben gelernt, wollte dann aber auch unbedingt mal This Is Us schauen. Da ich seit 2023 Disney+ habe, konnte ich das jetzt endlich auch mal machen. Ich kann nur sagen: ich habe noch nie bei einer Serie so viel geheult und Milo Ventimiglia war als Teenie-Badboy genauso mein Typ wie jetzt als 70er-Pornodarsteller-Vibes-Daddy. Es gibt einfach keinen anderen Mann, den ich mit Schnauzbart attraktiv finden würde, lol. Aber auch der Rest des Casts, die Erzählweise und die Story haben mich sehr begeistert.
If you really feel like bawling, I highly recommend you watch This Is Us. The family drama is told with overlapping, non-chronological timelines, and covers the lives of several generations and people that are somehow connected to each other. I also jumped on the hype train way too late, since the show first premiered in 2016. But back then I was busy watching Gilmore Girls and falling in love with Milo Ventimiglia, which then made me want to watch This Is Us. Since I got Disney+ in 2023, the time had finally come. All I can say is: I have never in my life cried as much because of a series, as I have while watching this show, and Milo Ventimiglia was my type as a teenage bad boy, and he still is my type as a 70s-pornstar-vibes-daddy. There is no other man I would find attractive with a moustache, lol. But the rest of the cast, the way the story was told and the events of the show were pretty amazing as well.
